home school field trip!

February 20, 2010

today, we were blessed to be able to visit one of our local tribes, the Cow Creek band of Umpqua Indians. their government offices are about 1 1/2 hours from where we live, so a group of us mama’s and our kiddos had a great day trip. i was overwhelmed by the generosity of the tribe during our visit; from refreshments awaiting us in the boardroom; to the tribal chairwoman (88 yrs old!) sharing history and personal insights; to the cultural resources director showing artifacts and allowing our kids to handle their treasures.

this field trip was my husband’s fabulous idea, when we were talking a few months ago about other ways (besides traditional textbooks, etc) to really learn about Native American history. why not visit a local tribe, he suggested. great idea, my amazing man. after phone calls and arranging, the trip came to fruition today.

we all walked away with a greater understanding of tribal history and with some very interesting facts and nuggets. they gave us all a plethora of treasures; coloring books for the kids, plus brochures, books and a video for us.

what a great day!
