steps in the right direction … part 2

there are so many steps in moving forward toward health and wellness, that i can get overwhelmed! there are many great steps that i’ve taken, and want to post about them here. there are even more that i’ve yet to take that i also want to post about …

so, in the next couple weeks, i will share about a few steps that feel like “big”, foundational ones for me: making chicken broth and fermented vegetables. i’ve been stirred and motivated to do both of these and finally, in recent months, have! so i will post some pics, some basic steps, some good research and info. and i’d love to hear yours!

for today,  i want to share some absolute nuggets of wisdom in this whole process of taking steps in the right direction. this is from a book entitled, “Nourishing Hope for Autism; Nutrition Intervention for Healing our Children” by Julie Matthews (thanks, Kelly, for letting me borrow this book!). although our family does not struggle w/autism, i found tremendous insight, information and practical steps that i believe would be of great benefit to the health of everyone, not just those with autism.

“step 1: ‘cleaning up the diet’: remove food additives, artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, MSG, nitrites, artificial sweeteners, trans fats, pesticides, GMO;

step 2: ‘cleaning up the home’: remove chemical cleaners, perfume, building materials, flouride, fabric softener, plastics;

step 3: ‘supplement basics’: fatty acids and cod liver oil, enzymes, probiotics, multi-vitamin/mineral;

step 4: ‘diet basics’: determining basics of fats, protein, carbohydrates;

step 5: (she offers diet modifications for “ASD” – autism spectrum disorder – which may include GFCF -gluten free, casein free – food sensitivities, low sugar);

step 6: ‘address phenols’: identify food sources of phenols and chemical additives, improve phenol processing;

step 7: ‘evolve diet: nutrition boosters’: nutrient-dense, healing foods: broths, juicing, enzyme-rich, fermented foods;

step 8: ‘refining the ASD diet’: adding principles of SCD, body ecology, LOD or other;

step 9: ‘cleaning up the gut’: yeast, parasites, balance intestinal flora, heal gut;

step 10: ‘supplement specifics’: antioxidants, immune support, anti-inflammatory, healing the gut;

step 11: ‘immune support’: supplements, anti-viral, anti-fungal, reducing inflammatory response;

step 12: ‘detox’: liver function, chelators”

phew! A LOT … of good steps.

i am struck by the realization that i have incorporated many of these steps but VIRTUALLY IGNORED step #1!! as in, i need to remove some of the serious “offenders” before i can hope that all the good things we are ADDING will have their full, positive impact.

so, i need to summon my willpower and determine to really, absolutely eliminate what i know needs to GO: food additives, artificial colors, flavors, pesticides, MSG, nitrites, artificial sweeteners, trans fats, pesticides, GMO. there is so much research and anecdotal info available that links these poisons to damage, danger and cancer in the human body. and is it a surprise!? our body doesn’t recognize these non-food, fake ingredients. =(
